Review: Temu Grimdark Sci Fi Miniatures

Now that we're starting off the Stargrave campaign it's an excuse to buy a bunch of new miniatures and terrain to fit a grimdark futuristic universe rather than Western Europe in the 1940's which has been the focus of all of my hobby efforts for the last 4 years! I need a bunch of cronies for us to fight throughout the campaign bu the 40K kits and prices are just so hard to justify. I was recently impressed by the quality of terrain I got from Temu (check out my review here) and so I thought to look again and see if there's anything out there with a 40K theme.

Well wouldn't you know that Temu is absolutely crawling with not only 40K adjacent terrain but 3D prints of actual miniatures that are heavily 'inspired' by existing GW kits. The prices are phenomenal and the pictures looked good enough so I took the plunge and ordered a squad with my terrain.

In the grim dark of the future there is only cataclysmic warzones.
The squad I purchased were listed as "Cataclysmic Warzone Squad 9pcs Set" and from the above picture they are quite clearly some type of imperial guard/traitor guard kill team. There's a squad leader with plasma gun, a flamer, a grenadier, vox operator and bunch of lasguners. The cost of this squad was $16 AUD and anyone who knows GW kits knows that a similar official product would easily be close to $100 AUD.

When the models arrived I was impressed to see the quality of the prints was high and the scale was perfect for the heroic 28-32mm that 40K is scaled in.

A nice clean print

They came in single piece prints with minimal flash and clean up required which was perfect for my purposes of getting them onto the table fast. I gave them a scrub in some warm water, glued them to their bases (which came with the minis!) and gave them a spray can undercoat then got to painting. I didn't want to spend a huge amount of time or effort painting them and was happy to have them at 'table top quality' but a more talented painter would really make these models pop and on the table they would fit in perfectly to a 40K game.

Test scheme looked good - time to get the squad done!

The finished squad!

All done and on the table together they really look quite good (if I say so myself!). It was really fun painting some guys who aren't olive drab or khaki and have some actual bold colours. Can't wait for our crew to meet them on some space hulk or pirate planet for a vicious firefight somewhere along our campaign!

Overall I was really impressed with the price and quality of these minis and will definitely be going back to Temu to pick up some other characters for the campaign so watch this space!

Signing off,

Chewie
